Banyan Bar + Refuge, an Asian gastropub in the South End, is expected to be closed for several weeks following a kitchen fire that damaged the restaurant at the end of June.

The blaze occurred in the early morning hours of June 30 and impacted the restaurant more than its staff and management initially anticipated, according to multiple Instagram posts.

Restaurant management said in a social media post the day of the fire that Banyan, located at 553 Tremont St., would reopen later that week. But in updates since then, added that it may take several weeks before Banyan can reopen due to repairs, inspections, and permitting.

In another update posted to a public South End neighborhood Facebook group, owner Rebecca Roth Gullo said no one was in the building at the time of the fire.

Gullo also said July 18 is the South End restaurant’s 10th anniversary.

“While it’s unlikely we’ll be open by then, we absolutely plan to mark the occasion — with a celebration of a decade in the South End and our rise from the small phoenix that sparked in our kitchen,” Gullo said.

Gullo is the founder of The Gallows Group, which includes Sally’s Sandwiches and Blackbird Doughnuts.
