You may instantly think of James Bond as a British Secret Service agent, but author Ian Fleming was inspired to create the iconic 007 when he met an ornithologist from Maine with the same name. Now, that ornithologist’s stunning Maine property is on the market for $4.2 million.
Bond came from a wealthy Philadelphia family who summered in Maine, according to a News Center Maine story. With his uncle, he co-authored Birds of Mount Desert Island, Acadia National Park, Maine. When Fleming caught sight of another book by Bond, Birds of the West Indies, he found his beloved character.
The five-bed, three-and-a-half bath seasonal property is composed of a 750-square-foot main property and three additional cabins, totaling about 2,300 square feet of space. In the main cabin, you’ll find an oversized granite boulder fireplace that embodies the cozy New England aesthetic. A deck near the water’s edge features cedar bark-clad railings that play into a woodland motif.
The three other cabins each function as sleeping quarters and have their own bathrooms. Comfortable yet functional, they’re great for cozy sleepovers on quiet nights in the forest.
“Kids would call the house here and ask if James Bond was there, and his wife would answer and say, ‘No, James is out. But this is Pussy Galore.’ So they just had a lot of fun with it,” said Story Litchfield of LandVest Christie’s International Real Estate, who has the listing.
Set on 15 stunning acres in Tremont, Maine, the property boasts views of Pretty Marsh Harbor out to Blue Hill Bay and several picturesque Maine islands. Filled with walking paths, there’s also a beautiful garden. A deepwater dock, several moorings, and a gravel beach offer a prime waterfront spot.
“It’s all very peaceful, and a lot of the paths have pine needles on them,” said Litchfield. “It’s really a very magical, dreamy spot.”
