Grotto, a cozy, subterranean Italian restaurant in Beacon Hill, will shutter at the end of summer, according to an announcement on its website and social media posted July 4.

Owner Scott Herritt began the statement as a reflection amid the restaurant’s 22nd anniversary on Bowdoin Street, before breaking the news that Grotto would soon shut down for good.

“With mixed emotions, I want to share that Grotto will be closing later this summer,” Herritt said on Instagram. “This has been a very difficult decision, but the time has come for a new chapter.”

Herritt said he wasn’t sure when exactly would be Grotto’s last day of service, but the lease for their hideaway space is up in September.

Until then, customers can dine at Grotto any day of the week for dinner from 5 to 9 p.m.

Grotto was known for serving classic Italian dishes — spaghetti and meatballs, fra diavolo, and bolognese — in a dimly-lit, romantic dining room. Herritt also took over the historic Marliave restaurant in 2008, but it never reopened after temporarily closing during the COVID-19 pandemic, reported Axios Boston.

“To all our incredible staff, past and present, and to everyone who has dined with us over the years: Thank you,” Herritt said. “You’ve made Grotto the special place it has been, and I will carry those memories with me always.”
