Everyone claims their Nonna’s cooking is the best. One Boston area chef wants you to prove it through a little friendly competition.
This summer Chef Anthony Caturano — of the North End’s Prezza and Tonno in Gloucester and Wakefield — is asking area Nonnas to submit their family recipes that could be featured at a special dinner at one of the three restaurants.
In an email, a spokesperson said Prezza and both Tonno locations have plans to serve a five-course meal, so Caturano is looking to approve 15 submissions.
There are, of course, some guidelines for entries. Each recipe must include accurate measurements, and if specialty ingredients are used, then list the brand used. Recipes can be submitted for any of the following courses: appetizers, salads, pasta, entrees, and desserts.
Anything that’s Italian or Mediterranean goes, except for sauce recipes.
“Chef Caturano insists his Nonna’s [gravy] was the best,” a spokesperson said.
Lastly, the restaurant team wants to hear the family story and history behind the recipe.
The chosen submissions will be featured at one of the three restaurants with Nonna’s name next to each dish. Contributors will also receive two complimentary tickets to the dinner, either at Prezza on Oct. 5, Tonno Gloucester on Oct. 19, and Tonno Wakefield on Oct. 26.
Those who don’t submit recipes can still participate by feasting instead. The five-course meals cost $100 a person, and diners can make the reservations now.
The press release said the contest and dinners were inspired by the Netflix film “Nonnas” about an Italian restaurant where the kitchen is run by grandmothers.
Caturano is asking that recipes are submitted by Sept. 1.
