One of the brightest young stars on the Red Sox is set to stay around for a while, potentially through the 2034 season.

Roman Anthony, who made his MLB debut for Boston in June after rising to become the No. 1 prospect in baseball, has signed an eight-year contract extension worth $130 million.

The news was initially reported by ESPN’s Jeff Passan, with the Red Sox confirming the deal hours later.

Anthony, 21, is currently hitting .283 with an .828 OPS. After hitting .210 in June during his first few weeks with the big league team, he has settled in with a .329 average (and a .960 OPS) over the course of July.

An additional component of the deal may end up being the “significant escalators that could take the maximum value of the deal to $230 million.”

If all goes to plan, the extension would keep Anthony in a Red Sox uniform until he’s at least 30. As Boston tries to reform its offensive following the Rafael Devers trade, Anthony’s presence has to be an important factor in the long term.

In the short term, Anthony was recently dealing with a back tightness issue that forced him from Boston’s lineup. Fortunately for the Red Sox, the injury doesn’t seem to be serious, as manager Alex Cora told reporters on Tuesday.
